GERMAN GEAR & STANDARDS

Bundeswehr equipment comes with its own terminology, specifications and identification systems. Here we decode the markings and terminology behind the gear.

CORE SUBJECTS TL / NSN / ISSUE / LABELS
FOCUS AUTHENTICITY & STANDARDS
What Does Bundeswehr TL Mean?

TL stands for Technische Lieferbedingungen — technical delivery conditions used for German military procurement.

They can define requirements for materials, construction, performance, quality assurance and other technical characteristics of an item.

NSN / NATO Stock Numbers

An NSN is a standardized NATO stock identifier used to identify supply items within military logistics systems.

It can help identify what an item is, but the presence of an NSN alone does not automatically prove that every example was actually issued.

Original Issue vs. Commercial Gear

Original issue gear was produced for an official military supply chain.

Commercial gear may use similar materials, camouflage patterns or specifications but was produced for civilian, law-enforcement or professional markets instead.

How to Read German Military Labels

German military labels can include sizing, manufacturer information, production dates, stock numbers, specification references and care instructions.

Reading those fields can tell you considerably more than relying on a product name alone.

Made in Germany vs. German Brand

A company being German does not automatically mean every product it sells was manufactured in Germany.

Brand origin and actual country of manufacture are two separate pieces of information.

SIZING & FIT

German military sizing can look completely unfamiliar. The Field Guide explains the original systems, measurements and fit behind the gear — while clothing in the Mission Frontline store is already converted into practical U.S. sizing for easier selection.

German Sizing — What You Need to Know

You do not need to decode German military sizes before ordering from Mission Frontline.

Clothing in the store is already presented using practical U.S. sizing wherever applicable.

This reference explains the original German and European systems behind those conversions — useful for understanding labels, surplus gear and manufacturer sizing.

Bundeswehr Trouser Sizes

Bundeswehr trousers can use numbered sizing systems that account for both body dimensions and height.

Waist and inseam measurements are therefore often more useful than the original size number by itself.

Jackets & Shirts

Field jackets and shirts are designed around movement and practical use rather than purely civilian fashion sizing.

Chest measurement, body height and intended layering should all be considered when converting the original size.

EU → U.S. Footwear

EU and U.S. footwear sizes can be converted approximately, but actual fit still depends on the model, last and intended sock system.

Size conversion should therefore be treated as a practical starting point rather than an absolute measurement.

Fit & Layering Allowance

Outer layers need enough room for the clothing underneath them.

A correct size therefore depends not only on body measurements but also on where the garment sits within the overall clothing system.

SIGNATURE MANAGEMENT

CAMOUFLAGE & SIGNATURE

Camouflage goes beyond visible pattern. Material, color and infrared behavior can all influence the signature of equipment.

PATTERNS FLECKTARN / TROPENTARN
SIGNATURE VISIBLE / IRR / NIR
What Is Flecktarn?

Flecktarn is the recognizable German camouflage family built around small irregular color fields.

It became closely associated with modern Bundeswehr field clothing and equipment.

READ THE FULL FLECKTARN FIELD NOTE →
Flecktarn vs. Tropentarn

Flecktarn uses a darker multi-color palette suited to temperate vegetation.

Tropentarn uses a much lighter three-color palette intended for drier and more arid environments.

IRR vs. NIR Explained

NIR refers to the near-infrared region of the electromagnetic spectrum.

IRR describes infrared-reflectance characteristics used to manage how materials behave in relevant observation environments.

Night-Vision Signature

Two pieces of equipment that look nearly identical in normal daylight can appear differently under night-vision systems.

Fabrics, dyes, webbing, coatings and plastic components can all influence the result.

Pattern & Production Differences

Flecktarn can vary slightly between production periods, fabrics and manufacturers.

Color variation therefore does not automatically mean an item is incorrect or inauthentic.

MATERIALS & CONSTRUCTION

Material names and technical numbers only become useful when you understand what they actually change in weight, durability, construction and real-world use.

TEXTILES CORDURA® / RIPSTOP / LAMINATES
CONSTRUCTION WEBBING / HARDWARE / STITCHING
CORDURA® Explained

CORDURA® is a family of branded performance fabrics widely used in packs, pouches and tactical equipment.

The CORDURA® name alone does not tell you the exact fabric weight, coating or construction. Those details still matter when comparing two pieces of equipment.

500D vs. 700D vs. 1000D

Denier describes the linear mass of the yarn used in a fabric. A larger number does not automatically mean a better product.

Heavier fabrics can offer greater abrasion resistance, while lighter constructions can reduce weight and bulk. The right choice depends on the application.

Ripstop & Laminates

Ripstop fabrics use a reinforcing grid woven into the material to help limit the spread of tears.

Laminates combine different material layers to create specific characteristics such as structure, low weight, weather resistance or compatibility with laser-cut designs.

Buckles & Webbing

Buckles and webbing are structural components, not just accessories. They transfer load, secure equipment and determine how easily a system can be adjusted or released.

Material quality and the way these components are attached can matter just as much as the main fabric.

Stitching & Reinforcement

High-stress areas often require additional reinforcement. Bartacks, repeated stitching and correctly placed seams help distribute forces through the equipment.

Good construction is therefore more than simply counting stitches — placement and load paths matter too.

LAYERING & WEATHER SYSTEMS

Tactical clothing works as a system. Each layer has a different job depending on weather, activity level and how long the wearer remains active or static.

FUNCTIONS BASE / MID / SHELL / INSULATION
CONDITIONS COLD / WIND / WET
Tactical Layering Explained

A layering system separates moisture management, warmth, wind resistance and weather protection across different garments.

Instead of expecting one jacket to do everything, layers can be added or removed as weather and activity levels change.

Understanding Level 4

“Level 4” terminology is commonly associated with lightweight wind-resistant clothing within modern military layering concepts.

Commercial products can use similar terminology without necessarily being official components of one specific military clothing system.

Understanding Level 7

“Level 7” generally refers to high-loft insulation intended for very cold conditions and periods of lower physical activity.

This type of insulation is normally worn over other layers and is designed primarily to retain warmth rather than manage high-output activity.

Grid Fleece Explained

Grid fleece uses a structured inner surface with alternating raised areas and channels.

The design can provide useful insulation while allowing moisture and excess heat to move through the channels during active use.

Softshell vs. Hardshell

Softshell garments generally prioritize movement, breathability and wind resistance.

Hardshells prioritize stronger protection from rain and severe weather, usually with a greater compromise in breathability.

LOAD CARRIAGE & MODULAR SYSTEMS

Packs, pouches, carriers and belts work as equipment systems. This section explains how modular attachment, load distribution and different generations of load-carrying equipment work.

PLATFORM MOLLE / PALS
APPLICATION PACKS / POUCHES / CARRIERS
MOLLE vs. PALS

PALS is the standardized webbing grid used to attach compatible equipment.

MOLLE refers to the broader modular load-carrying system built around that interface. In everyday use, the terms are often used interchangeably.

Modular Pouch Attachment

Traditional MOLLE-compatible pouches are secured by weaving attachment straps through alternating rows of PALS webbing.

Manufacturers may use sewn straps, polymer clips or other retention methods while still working with the same basic PALS interface.

Plate Carrier Systems

Modern plate carriers can function as modular equipment platforms rather than simply as carriers for armor plates.

PALS fields, placards, cummerbunds and accessory mounting points determine how equipment can be arranged around the platform.

Load-Carriage Basics

Carrying capacity is only one part of load carriage. Weight distribution, stability, accessibility and interaction with other equipment can be equally important.

A good setup keeps necessary equipment accessible without placing unnecessary bulk or weight where it interferes with movement.

Legacy Bundeswehr Systems

Older Bundeswehr load-carrying systems can use attachment methods that predate modern PALS-based gear.

Compatibility therefore depends on the exact generation and system rather than simply on the equipment being German.
